Home Town - Durango, Co
Growing up in Durango was really great. I was exposed to so many
different outdoor activities at a young age, Durango played a huge
role in who I am today.
Paddling Days per year - I have been trying to paddle hard for the
last 2 years, 12 months a year. I got 20+ days on the water in
January.I just finished up with two weeks of swift water rescue
courses, where I finalized my Instructors certification through
Sierra Rescue and Rescue 3 International.
Favorite Place to Paddle - I love California for the smooth granite
and large features. I can also end up running a 30 foot waterfall
twice in one week with rainbows and all during February. Each place
has its own unique feel and offers a paddler something different.
Why Do I Paddle - I love to feel. Emotion, energy, cold water,
flying through the air, pressure of being above a big rapid and the
joy of looking back up at one. I have yet to find another sport that
gives me the same rush. Also the travel, I feel as though I get to
explore places that very few people will ever see. I want to live my
life to the fullest and kayaking is the best way for me to do that.
Favorite Kayaking Flick - Movies are really great but its hard to
beat a good still shot. I have had the pleasure of paddling with
Darin McQuoid alot this winter, his website has some of the best
whitewater stills I have seen. (
www.darinmcquoid.com) say Frontier
will easily become my new favorite, with Slippery When Wet coming in
close for the tie. With advances in technology, making smaller
cameras with full HD as well as the creativity of Rush Sturges and
Shon Bullock and just the stuff people are running today its a
really great time for kayaking!
What do I do when the river is dry - Go somewhere that is wet!
Top Five Gear Picks -
1. Kokatat GMER -Teaching swiftwater rescue in January and February
is cold even in California, I trust no other brand to keep me dry.
2. Five Ten Shoes - Their sticky rubber is unbeatable.
3. Stohlquist Descent - comfortable, I also really appreciate those
portage shoulders
4. Shred Ready Tsunami Pads- While they may be a touch more bulky
than other pads on the market, I think they offer the best elbow and
forearm protection.
5. Shred Ready Full Face - With a ridiculously great price its hard
to go wrong with the extra protection.
